Abstract:
This study aimed to discover and explained the types of social criticism
and the social condition in Wladyslaw Szpilman’s novel entitled ‘’The Pianist’’
and this study was hope to be utilized by further researcher.
The data sources used in this study was the novel ‘’The Pianist’’. In
analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative research method
through sociological approach. Data were obtained by using the techniques of
reading, noting and analyzing. While in classifying the data, the writer used
Marx’s theory of nine concepts of social criticism and used Alan Swingewood’s
theory sociological of literature.
After analyzing the data, the writer found that the novel of Wladyslaw
Szpilman entitled ‘’The Pianist’’ contains 50 data divided into 8 parts consists of
9 data of social criticism of political problems, 7 data of social criticism of
economic problems, 2 data of social criticism of educational problems, 8 data of
cultural problems, 17 data of social criticism of moral issues, 3 data of social
criticism of family problems, 3 data of social criticism of religious problems and
1 data of social criticism of technology problems. From the data it can be said
that the most dominant data were social criticism of moral issues. The data of
moral issues showed that many people live the difficult time during the war
because of the suppression of the Germans action lead by Hitler.
