Abstract:
The objectives of the study of this research is to know the students’
ability of SMP Muhammadiyah 13 in understanding about Modal
Auxiliaries in english. Now, background of written this skripsi based on
result of writer’s experienced and observed when did research program at
the school. Where the writer find many students don’t understand even
there is who didn’t know at all about modal auxiliary. Therefore, through
this skripsi, the writer try to described and classified level of students’
ability in using modal auxiliary descriptively.
For data collecting, the writer use analyzed descriptive technique
through giving written test about modal auxiliary in the form of question
which divide into two kind of item that is multiple choice test and matching
word test. The result of test that was doing by the students then calculated
by using formula and described into percentage table form. The next,
result of calculated will be determine the criteria of students’ ability in using
modal auxiliaries.
After do calculating from the students test result, the writers get total
percentage of correct and incorrect answer of each test, then writer also
calculating average of total frequency. The result of calculated show that
total percentage of correct and incorrect answer from multiple choice test
is 30,8% and 69,6%. While total percentage of correct and incorrect
answer in matching words is 40,8% and 59,2%. This thing show that
percentage of incorrect of each test is bigger than percentage of correct.
And if classified into criteria that adopted from arikunto’s criteria, so writer
classifying the students’ ability into low score because according arikunto’s
criteria, the score of low percentage is more less 30-55%. And it could be
seen from total percentage of correct answer in each test be it from
multiple choice test as well as in matching word test
