dc.description.abstract This research describes the strategies used by the teacher in teaching speaking at SMPN 4 Sungguminasa. The objective of this research is to investigate what is the teachers‟ strategy in teaching speaking to the English Ninth grade students of SMPN 4 Sungguminasa. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted at SMPN 4 Sungguminasa. Data was collected by using three instruments they are observation cheklist, interview and documentation. Data was collected by doing interview and observation. Data analyzed through field notes, interview and others materials to find out the strategies by English teachers, and describing the teachers‟ strategies applied in the Ninth Grade Students of SMPN 4 Sungguminasa. The result of the research concludes that 1) the strategies used by the two teachers of SMPN 4 Sungguminasa are teacher A used showing and telling strategy, flexible time strategy, questioning to check for understanding strategy, getting students working together with the strategy and plenty of practice. Teacher B used setting clear lesson goal strategy, showing and telling strategy, flexible time strategy, plenty of practice strategy, and provide students with feedback strategy. en_US
