dc.description.abstract This research is intended to find whether or not the teachers’ motivation can build the students confidence in speaking English. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative analysis. The study was conducted at SMPN 8 Makassar with a population of students of class VIII-13 consisting of 30 students. Number of Instruments in use is a motivational questionnaire to measure students' self confidence in speaking English, observation of teachers in teaching English, and teacher interviews to obtain information. The results of this research indicate that there is a significant influence between giving motivation to students to students' self confidence in speaking English. It can be seen from the results of analysis where the students who got the category of "very good" reached 60%. Highly motivated students have better speaking skills compared with low motivated students. Therefore, the writer suggests the teachers of English to maintain student motivation to increase students' self confidence in speaking English. en_US
