Abstract:
This study aims to find, classify, and determine the type of family conflict that
most dominantly appears in the film script 'Marriage Story' by Noah Baumbach and
analyze the factors and impacts of family conflict on the main characters found in
the film script.
The method used in collecting data related to the subject of this research is a
qualitative method. This research was conducted by collecting relevant data and
information about the topic or research problem from books and the internet
available for analysis. Data collection was carried out with the following steps:
reading the film script in its entirety, then selecting data based on the category of
family conflict type and classifying the factors and impacts of family conflict on
the main character through dialogue in the film script. Meanwhile, the steps of data
analysis are identifying the types of figurative language according to Ursula Lehr,
identifying the factors and impacts of family conflict on the main character
according to Sadarjoen, and finally interpreting the data in the form of a description.
The writer found that there were 6 types of family conflict which divided into:
conflict with parents, conflict with child, conflict with other people, conflict
between husband and wife, conflict of job selection, and inner conflict. Conflicts
with parents and job selection are shown as rare among the 6 types of family
conflict. It can be indicated that the dominant type of family conflict in this text is
among husband and wife. As for the factors of family conflict divided into:
economic factors, child factor, communication failure factor, and jealousy factor.
Economic factors and jealousy factor were the rarely factors showed among 4 types
of factors. The results found that communication failure is the most influential
factor. The results of factors from type of family conflict, the impact to the main
character was a lack of trust in each other, a sense of pressure, and worries that
affect decision making in the process of solving marriage problem that led the
couple to divorced
