Abstract:
This study aims to evaluate the application of semiotics in
Indonesian news articles relating to the election campaign of
Governor and Deputy Governor Candidates in South Sulawesi
during the 2013-2018 periods. The data is analysed through a
semiotic analysis method established by Roland Barthes, known as
the two-stage theory. The results showed that the application of
semiotics in newspaper articles relating to the election campaign
only highlighted the struggle of political actors by providing
imagery to build public attention by participating in media coverage
to be elected as future leaders. The interpretation of the campaign
language in broadcasted news texts is done through the text
modification. It makes the changes in political campaign news does
not shown clearly. The news only contains power-based political
actions of the political actors.
